FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions
What services are provided to REGIS Participant communities & agencies?
As a part of REGIS Participants' yearly membership dues, a variety of services are provided to members at no additional cost. A listing of many of these services is provided below in two different formats:
How is the system being maintained?
The Data Maintenance process has been established and tweaked during the past few years of live data maintenance. Participants have identifyied Subject Matter Experts and current workflows to determine the best way to integrate maintaining data.
Editing of the data and attributes is performed by various staff from participants and REGIS maintenance services.
What are the minimum hardware specifications for running REGIS software?
There are minimal hardware specifications for running REGIS software. In the case of ArcGIS (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo), a small application is installed on users computers because of the utilization of a terminal server. The minimum hardware requirements for running ArcView are:
- Operating System: Windows NT or 95/98/2000/XP.
- Connection: High-Speed Internet, T1 or WAN connection recommended; modem connection also supported
For accessing the ArcIMS application, the only specifications are a computer connected to the Internet with a web browser (Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer) installed. Of course, the faster the Internet connection, the faster data can be transferred to the ArcIMS application.
What software do I need in order to run the REGIS applications?
ArcView: Citrix MetaFrame is the only additional software required.
ArcIMS: A standard web browser, such as Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer.
How do I get connected to REGIS for ArcView?
Contact your Project Coordinator to request a username for the system. Attend a training class for ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcIMS or other application, if necessary. Once training is complete, simply log onto the system using the REGIS Username and password you have been supplied.
How do I get Training?
Contact your Project Coordinator who can provide information on how to sign up for any currently offered training courses. Presently, the primary training classes are for the ArcView application. Training for other applications will occur in the future. Feel free to check the REGIS calendar for training dates.
If I am not a REGIS participant, can I still take the classes?
Training is generally only available to REGIS participants.
Where can I take specific ESRI product or general GIS training?
Although the REGIS Agency may offer specific ESRI product training from time to time, we do encourage interested individuals to check into it themselves. You can find courses offered directly through ESRI, or through organizations like ICARD.
Will REGIS migrate to Arc 8/9?
The REGIS Agency migrated directly to the Arc9 environment in third quarter of 2004. More information can be found on the Arc9 Migration website.
Will the Digital Orthophotography be updated?
All of Kent County and the City of Hudsonville were re-flown with new, six-inch pixel digital orthophotography in May 2003. This data was made available to REGIS users in September 2004.
What does [insert any GIS-related term here] mean?
As with many types of technology, GIS has many terms and acronyms which may be unfamiliar to the average person or someone new to the environment. URISA has created an excellent GIS Glossary of Terms which hopefully should answer most general GIS-related questions:
Can I purchase REGIS Digital Spatial Data?
Yes! See our Data Distribution page for available data layers, formats, pricing and ordering instructions.
As a non-participant, how do I properly attribute maps containing REGIS data?
