Centralized System Architecture
The REGIS project participants have elected to change the REGIS system architecture from decentralized and distributed to centralized. The decentralized and distributed architecture was proposed based on REGIS participants' desire not to rely on a centralized WAN (Wide Area Network). With recent advancements in the NT Terminal Server/Client architecture, GIS projects can now effectively allow dial-up access in lieu of a high-speed, large bandwidth WAN.
The centralized system architecture will provide access to the REGIS database, applications, and maintenance activities at a single location. The benefits to the REGIS participants of this centralized access are as follows:
- Smaller participants have the option of maintaining their own data
- Broader access to REGIS data
- Elimination of possible data corruption
- Decreased demands on LAN/WAN bandwidth due to server-based computing
- Remove NT dependency on client machines, also operating system and platform independent
- Thin client rather than fat client (i.e., RAM and processor requirements reduced)
- Eliminates need for installation of local software, applications, and data (i.e., easier installation, deployment, and support)
